Gipuzkoa includes 70 miles of coastline characterized by dramatic sea cliffs, beaches that brave the open waters of the Cantabrian Sea, and incredibly charming fishing villages. In fact, everything about these villages is delightful: the views, narrow streets, plazas, shops, restaurants and people. And all of it surrounded by the delicious flavours and aromas brought from the sea to the table.

The 16 beaches along the Basque Coast become a hive of activity during the summer months. The seaside promenades come alive with people of all ages, both locals and tourists alike, who take time off from their walks to enjoy an ice cream or a dip in the ocean. The beaches bustle with bathers and people who take to the waves on their surfboards. San Sebastian, Zarautz, Getaria, Deba and Mutriku are destinations for surfers from around the globe, whose impressive manoeuvres add to the thrill and beauty of the scenery.

An excellent plan for visitors of all types. Take a car tour of the villages along the Basque Coast. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets, take in the views from the many vantage points, breathe in the sea air at the fishing ports and enjoy a glass of txakoli wine on one of the historical town squares. If you want some spectacular seascape views, follow the N-634 road for sixty kilometres, with stops in Hondarribia, Pasaia, Orio, Zarautz, Getaria, Zumaia, Deba and Mutriku.

Seafood for lunch… and you'll come back for more at dinner time. You'll wonder how such simple things can taste so delicious – salted anchovies, octopus, tuna olive oil, sea bream…The secret is in the sea, in the fresh ingredients, and in the expert hands that control the intensity of the embers under the grill, ensuring the perfect temperature. Don't forget to visit one of the many fish restaurants along the Basque Coast, particularly in the towns of Getaria, Orio and Hondarribia, where freshly caught fish is grilled whole on outdoor barbeques. And nothing better to wash a meal down than a glass of txakoli, a sophisticated crisp white wine that now caters to some of the world's most demanding palates. Txakoli has had its own designation of origin since 1987.
