Top-class nautical leisure activities
Friday An active evening on the waves to start off the weekend
You’ve arrived in this magical region containing two of the most beautiful sections of our coastline — the Txingudi Bay and the Bidasoa River — both packed with things to do. If you can, try to get here in good time on Friday afternoon. If you want a fresh perspective on the area, take a pleasant catamaran trip across the Txingudi Bay to discover the local wildlife. There’s always a great atmosphere on board, with local seafarers who know the coast like the back of their hands. But if you prefer something a bit more active, then a spot of paddle surfing may be the thing for you. Be one with your surroundings as you skim across the water! It’s a great way of getting to know the river, the small anchorages and the harbours along the way and of crossing to the other side… And you can even ride a wave or two! Then finish off the day with a delicious dinner at the marina and some well-earned sleep.
Saturday Morning: kayak and sports fishing,
Our next stop is Irun, where you can discover another of the most beautiful spots on this coast, the Bidasoa River. And what better way to get about than at water level, paddling a kayak in the fabulous natural surroundings of Pheasant Island, administered alternately by France and Spain, making it the world’s smallest condominium. Disconnect from the world. Enjoy peace, laughter... and exercise. Then head back to Hondarribia to get a taste of one of its most traditional occupations, artisan fishing. In few disciplines is the wisdom and expertise of a local guide so important. A couple of hours of sport fishing with an expert from Hondarribia will help you master the art. And you’re sure of a catch! If you want to eat out, you’ll find plenty of restaurants in Irun and Hondarribia, where you can choose from traditional cooking or Basque nouvelle cuisine.
Saturday Afternoon: a magical sunset beneath the sails
And now it’s time to experience the sunset from a different angle, at the helm of a sailboat. From the moment you weigh anchor, you’re in a different world. The sound of the hull hissing through the sea, the slight heel of the boat and the wind in your face... in a second, all your landlocked cares will be forgotten. The captain will let you take the helm and help handle the sails, as you skim through this fairy-tale landscape. If you haven’t paid a visit to the historical centre of Hondarribia yet, now’s the perfect time. Stroll through the steep, narrow streets at dusk; it will make a perfect end to a delightful evening. You’ll find some wonderful places to have dinner or a drink.
Sunday Action and gastronomic delights, an unfailing combination
If you enjoy high intensity water sports, you must try jet-skiing, banana boating, flyboarding or wakeboarding. High-adrenalin sessions in total safety! There are, of course, some more peaceful alternatives, such as dinghy sailing. There are various classes of boat on offer, but they all offer a lightness and sensitivity that mean that the slightest gust of wind will take you skimming across the water, against the backdrop of the spectacular scenery. And if you’re interested in the life on the seabed, why not try scuba diving? Our seabed, like our character, has some special features of its own; look down and discover how deep it runs! After a busy morning, why not chill out in one of the outdoor cafes in the colourful La Marina district, so full of atmosphere, where you can relax and try some delicious pintxos. But if you want something a bit more substantial, you’ll find an excellent range of restaurants, cider houses and a txakoli winery with guided tours.
