The Romans set up camp in IRUN twenty centuries ago. To see how they buried their dead, visit the SANTA ELENA hermitage where a necropolis was discovered and the ROMAN MUSEUM AT OIASSO.
This museum is home to a collection of remains from the Roman period that were found in ancient Oiasso, now Irun, one of Gipuzkoa's most important archaeological events. This was a bustling settlement thanks to its highly active port between the years 70 and 200 AD and the silver and copper mining operations of Mount Aiako Harria. The Oiasso Roman Museum seeks to highlight the archaeological heritage of the area and become a leading centre for the dissemination of knowledge about the Roman period in the Bay of Biscay. It is also a place where cultural activities relating to Ancient History and Archaeology are carried out.
