Cathedral of El Buen Pastor (the Good Shepherd)
The Buen Pastor Cathedral is the largest religious building in Donostia–San Sebastian. It rises high above the city centre, forming a beautiful ensemble with the nearby Koldo Mitxelena Arts Centre and the Post Office building. The 75-metre spire over the main doorway is visible from practically all points in the city, which is itself the centre of tourism in Gipuzkoa. Designed in neo-Gothic style by local architect Manuel Echave, the cathedral was consecrated in 1897. It is built to a regular plan, in the form of a Latin cross, with three naves, a transept and a presbytery. Like so many other buildings in the city, the ashlar-work construction used stones from the quarries on Mount Igeldo. It boasts numerous decorative features, including stained glass windows, gargoyles and pinnacles.
