Atauts

The name Atauts comes from 'ate' + 'huts' ('empty' + 'door' in Basque).

The name Atauts comes from 'ate' + 'huts' ('empty' + 'door' in Basque). This was the first sculpture Jorge Oteiza placed in Tolosa. The sculpture sits in the middle of a square called Plaza del Triángulo, near the 'Puerta de Castilla', one of the gates to the city when Tolosa was surrounded by a medieval wall. In Atauts, Oteiza intends to symbolize 'time-space', metaphysics and the transcendent dimension of life.
